The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) takes place in Yerevan, Armenia 19–30 October 2026. Four years on from when the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was agreed, it is an important moment to assess progress towards the targets that were set.
The CBD has released a global review of collective progress in the implementation of the Framework, looking at all Parties response to the KMGBF and opening the door for discussion and review at COP17.
Astrid Schomaker said: “We now have, for the first time with the Global Report, a shared evidence base on how we are doing in implementing the Framework, but evidence is only valuable if it informs action” (full quote here).
The Framework has generated unprecedented global engagement, and has driven action, innovation, collaboration and learning experiences across all 23 targets. However, unless collective implementation accelerates rapidly, the 2030 targets and mission will not be achieved. While it is too early to detect change in biodiversity outcomes, the slow rate of current progress represents a long-term risk, as achieving the 2030 targets and mission are the foundation for putting the world on a pathway towards the 2050 goals and vision.
